What to Expect

Destinations

LuxorEsnaEdfuKom OmboAswan

A chartered dahabiya — the traditional wooden sailing vessel once favoured by Egyptian royalty and Victorian explorers — carries you between Luxor and Aswan at a pace dictated only by the wind and your own wishes. There are no schedules, no other passengers, no announcements. The temples appear on the riverbank as they have for millennia. Your private crew anticipates every need. Evenings are spent anchored in silence, the only sound the movement of the Nile.

Day by Day

Your Itinerary

Every day is a starting point. Your Egyptologist and concierge will adapt the pace and sequence to suit your preferences.

Day 1Luxor

Embarkation

Arrive in Luxor and transfer directly to the dahabiya moored on the West Bank. Your captain and crew of six welcome you aboard. The afternoon is spent settling into your cabin and taking tea on deck as Luxor's temples glow in the afternoon light. Your Egyptologist joins for dinner and outlines the days ahead.

Day 2Luxor West Bank

Valley of the Kings

Before the dahabiya casts off, a private morning on the West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, Deir el-Bahari, and the Ramesseum. Return to the vessel for lunch as the crew raises sail and the journey south begins. The afternoon passes on deck, watching the riverbanks slide by — palm groves, water buffalo, children waving from the shore.

Day 3Esna

The Temple of Khnum

Anchor at Esna and visit the Temple of Khnum — largely still buried beneath the modern town, giving it an extraordinary intimacy. Your Egyptologist deciphers the astronomical ceiling. Return to the dahabiya for a lunch of freshly caught Nile perch prepared by your private chef. Afternoon sailing through the most fertile stretch of the valley.

Day 4Edfu

The Temple of Horus

Arrive at Edfu at dawn. The Temple of Horus — the best-preserved temple in Egypt — is visited before the tourist coaches arrive, giving you the colonnaded halls and the inner sanctuary in near-silence. Sunset cocktails on deck as the dahabiya continues south, the desert cliffs turning amber in the fading light.

Day 5Kom Ombo

The Double Temple

Moor at Kom Ombo for the unique double temple dedicated to Sobek and Horus. The Crocodile Museum, housed within the temple complex, contains mummified crocodiles and ancient surgical instruments. Dinner on deck anchored mid-river, the stars extraordinary in the absence of light pollution.

Day 6–7Aswan

Arrival at the First Cataract

The dahabiya arrives at Aswan, where the Nile narrows between granite boulders and the pace of the river changes entirely. Two days to explore: the Nubian Museum, Elephantine Island by private motorboat, the Philae Temple (reached by private launch), and the unfinished obelisk in the granite quarries. One evening is reserved for a private dinner at the Old Cataract Hotel.

Day 7Aswan — Departure

Farewell on the Nile

A final morning on deck watching the Nile traffic — feluccas, fishing boats, the occasional cargo barge. Your crew prepares a farewell breakfast. Private transfer to Aswan Airport for your onward journey, or extend your stay at the Old Cataract.
